More about our Radiator Shelves

Radiator shelves buying guide

A radiator shelf is a solid wood shelf fitted to the wall just above a radiator. It gives you a useful display surface in a spot that usually goes to waste, and it helps push warm air out into the room rather than letting it drift straight up the wall, so it earns its place as well as finishing off the space.

Choosing a radiator shelf

Match the length of the shelf to the width of your radiator. Most people go a little longer than the radiator so it overhangs each end by 3 to 4cm, which looks balanced and lets the heat rise past it. All of ours are cut to your exact length, so you can match your radiator precisely or ask for a bespoke size. On depth, a slim shelf around 10cm deep sits neatly above the radiator without jutting into the room, while a deeper shelf gives you more to display but should be mounted a touch higher.

Oak or pine

Solid oak is the classic choice, hard wearing, fine grained and a natural fit above a radiator. Pine is warmer in tone, more rustic, and takes paint and wax beautifully, so it suits painted and country looks. Both are solid wood all the way through and made to order.

Fitting above your radiator

Leave a gap between the top of the radiator and the underside of the shelf so warm air can circulate. As a guide, allow at least 5cm above a modern panel radiator, and more, up to around 15cm, above a hotter cast iron radiator or if you have chosen a deeper shelf. The bigger the gap, the better the heat moves around the room.

Made in Yorkshire

Every radiator shelf is handmade to order in our Halifax workshop and finished by hand, so no two are quite the same.

All our timber is FSC certified and responsibly sourced!

Frequently asked questions

What is a radiator shelf?
A radiator shelf is a shelf fitted to the wall just above a radiator. It gives you a display surface in an otherwise unused spot and helps deflect heat out into the room rather than letting it rise straight up the wall.
Do radiator shelves affect the heating?
Fitted with a sensible gap above the radiator, a shelf actually helps by nudging warm air out into the room. The key is leaving enough clearance, at least 5cm above a modern radiator, so the heat can still circulate freely.
How much gap should I leave above the radiator?
Allow at least 5cm between the top of the radiator and the underside of the shelf for a modern panel radiator, and up to around 15cm for a hotter cast iron radiator or a deeper shelf.
How long should a radiator shelf be?
Most people choose a shelf a little longer than the radiator, so it overhangs by around 3 to 4cm at each end. Ours are cut to your exact length, so you can match your radiator or go bespoke.
What is the best wood for a radiator shelf?
Solid oak is the popular choice, hard wearing and well suited to sitting above a radiator. Pine is a warmer, more rustic and paintable option. Both are solid wood throughout.
How are they fixed, and can they go on plasterboard?
Depending on the style, they fix with keyhole fixings or hidden floating fixings, supplied for solid walls. They can be fitted to plasterboard, but you would need to source your own suitable fixings for that wall type.
Are they made to size?
Yes. Every radiator shelf is made to order and cut to your length, and we can make bespoke sizes on request.
