Oak Fireplace & Mantel Beams
Oak fireplace beams and mantel beams, handmade to order in our Halifax workshop. A solid wood beam above a fireplace or log burner adds warmth, character and a practical shelf in one piece, in oak and pine, in lengths from 30cm to 200cm. The oak range comes in seven wax finishes, and the rustic pine range in light, medium or dark wax. Both use concealed fixings and sit flush to the wall with no visible brackets. Solid timber throughout, no MDF or veneer.

SustainabilityFrequently asked questions
What length mantel beam do I need?
Measure the width of your fireplace opening and add at least 15โ20cm either side. For a chimney breast that fills the wall, match the beam to the chimney breast width. If you're unsure, send us your measurements and we'll recommend the right length before you order.
How far above a log burner should a mantel beam sit?
There's no single answer โ the safe clearance distance depends on your stove's heat output and flue type. Check your stove manufacturer's guidelines or HETAS guidance for the specific minimum clearance for your installation. We can advise based on your setup if you get in touch before ordering.
Can I get a custom size?
Yes. All our mantel beams are made to order and bespoke lengths are available. Standard range is 30cm to 200cm; if you need something outside that, get in touch with your measurements and we'll confirm what's possible and any adjustment to lead time.
How are the beams fixed to the wall?
All our mantel beams use concealed fixings โ the beam sits on hidden brackets fixed into solid masonry or studwork. There are no visible supports. The fixings are included; full fitting instructions come with every order. For a step-by-step guide, see our blog post on how to fit a mantel beam.
How long does delivery take?
All mantel beams are made to order with a standard lead time of 1โ2 weeks. UK delivery is ยฃ5.95, and free on orders over ยฃ200.
Will my beam have visible cracks?
Yes, likely. Small to moderate cracks and surface checking are normal in solid timber and are part of the character we celebrate. These do not affect structural integrity. If you strongly prefer minimal visible cracking, use the checkout note to request itโwe'll source one for you where possible. But please understand that some variation is inherent to real wood.
Are cracks a sign of poor quality?
No. Small to moderate surface cracks and checks are a natural part of the timber's stress-relief process. They indicate solid, authentic woodโnot poor quality. We reject beams for deep structural splits, warping, worm damage, or decay. The cracks and checks on our beams fall well within acceptable quality standards.
Why does character cost the same as a clean beam?
Character beams are solid, premium timberโthe same grade as any clean beam. The visible marks are natural, not a downgrade. We price all our beams on material quality, not cosmetic appearance.
Can I return a beam if it has cracks I don't like?
Our beams are sold as-is with full transparency about character. If you're unsure, request a minimal-character option at checkout, or contact us before ordering to discuss your preference.
