More about our Mantel Shelves & Mantelpieces

Mantel shelf or mantelpiece?

A mantel shelf and a mantelpiece do the same job, giving you a surface above the fireplace for a clock, candles or framed photos, they just carry it differently. A floating mantel shelf fixes flat to the wall with hidden brackets for a clean, minimal look. A mantelpiece sits on a pair of decorative corbels, the timber brackets underneath, for a more traditional, built-in feel. Both are handmade to order in solid oak or pine and cut to your length.

Choosing your style

Go slim and floating in a modern room or above a simple fire, or choose the corbel mantelpiece where you want more presence and period detail. Oak gives a warmer, characterful finish, while pine is lighter and takes paint well. Measure the width you want, allowing a little overhang past the fireplace opening on each side, and we make it to fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mantel shelf and a mantelpiece?
Same job, different fixing. A floating mantel shelf fixes flat to the wall with hidden brackets for a clean look, while a mantelpiece sits on decorative corbels for a more traditional, built-in feel.
What is a corbel shelf?
A corbel shelf is a shelf supported on two decorative timber brackets, called corbels. Above a fireplace it gives a built-in mantelpiece look with no building work, and the same style works as a display shelf elsewhere in the room.
What wood are they made from?
Solid oak or pine, made to order, in a choice of waxed finishes.
Can I have it cut to a specific length?
Yes. Every one is made to order, so tell us the length and we cut it to fit your fireplace, ideally with a little overhang each side.
Can I use one above a wood burning stove?
Yes, but as timber is combustible, follow your stove manufacturer's clearance distances and building regulations when fitting.
