More about our Wooden Fire Surrounds

Why choose solid wood?

A fire surround sits permanently against the chimney breast and takes the full range of conditions a working fireplace creates โ€” heat cycling as the fire is lit and dies down, dust, the occasional knock from a log basket. Most entry-level fire surrounds are built on an MDF core with a painted or veneered finish. MDF is stable at room temperature, but in the environment directly around a fireplace โ€” warm when the fire is in, cold when it isn't โ€” the core expands and contracts unevenly. The finish begins to crack along the joints, and once that starts, it accelerates.

Solid oak and solid pine move slightly with temperature changes but do so as a single piece of timber rather than a core and surface working against each other. The joints stay tight, the finish stays intact, and if the surface wears after years of use it can be re-waxed rather than replaced.

Types of wooden fire surrounds

Solid oak fire surrounds: Dense, fine-grained and warm-toned. Available in natural, heritage oak, honey and dark roast finishes applied by hand in the workshop. Oak holds its colour and character well in a fireplace environment โ€” it darkens slightly with heat exposure over time, which most customers find adds to the piece rather than detracting from it. Suits both contemporary and traditional rooms.

Solid pine fire surrounds: Lighter in weight and colour than oak, with more pronounced knots and grain movement. Pine suits farmhouse kitchens, country living rooms and cottage interiors where natural timber character is the point. Available in natural and wax finishes. Pine is also the more affordable entry point into the range โ€” the same solid timber construction throughout, at a lower material cost.

How to choose the right fire surround

The key measurement is your fireplace opening: height and width of the actual opening in the chimney breast. The surround legs sit either side of the opening and the header sits above it โ€” you need clearance around the opening so the surround frame doesn't encroach into it. A standard guide is 50โ€“75mm clearance each side and above the opening; always check this against your specific fireplace type.

If you have a wood-burning stove, check the stove manufacturer's minimum clearance distances from combustible materials before ordering. Stoves run hotter than open fires and solid timber surrounds must sit outside those clearance zones. Get in touch with your stove model and we can advise on suitability before you order.

Oak or pine: oak is the better choice for a contemporary or period room where you want a refined finish. Pine suits farmhouse and country interiors and is the more affordable option. Both are solid timber throughout โ€” the difference is character and price rather than structural quality.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a fire surround and a mantel beam?
A fire surround is a full frame โ€” legs either side of the fireplace opening and a header above, usually with a shelf on top. A mantel beam is just the horizontal shelf element, fixed directly to the wall above the opening with no legs. If you want to frame the opening, that's a surround. If you just want a beam or shelf above the fire, that's a mantel beam.
Can a wooden fire surround be used with a wood-burning stove?
Yes, but check the stove manufacturer's minimum clearance distances from combustible materials first. Stoves run hotter than open fires and solid timber must sit outside those clearance zones. Get in touch with your stove model before ordering and we can confirm suitability.
Oak or pine โ€” which should I choose?
Oak is denser, finer-grained and suits contemporary or period interiors. Pine has more visible knots and grain movement, a lighter colour and suits farmhouse, cottage or country-style rooms. Pine is also the more affordable option. Both are solid timber throughout โ€” the difference is character, colour and price.
Can I get a bespoke size?
Yes. Get in touch with the height and width of your fireplace opening before ordering and we'll confirm what's possible from the workshop. Bespoke sizes carry the same 3โ€“5 week lead time as standard pieces.
How long does delivery take?
Fire surrounds are made to order with a 1-2 week lead time. Free UK delivery on all orders.
