Solid oak shelves with brackets, handmade to order in our Halifax workshop. Choose metal or wooden brackets and a shelf cut to your length in solid European oak, never veneer or MDF. Fixed through the brackets into the wall studs, each shelf holds up to 30kg, so it takes real weight where a floating shelf cannot.

What are oak shelves with brackets?

Oak shelves with brackets are solid oak shelves mounted on visible wall brackets, in metal or wood, that carry the load and become part of the look. Because the weight goes through the brackets into the wall, they hold far more than a concealed floating shelf, up to 30kg when fixed into studs.

Bracket shelves or floating shelves?

Both are solid oak, the difference is how they mount and how much they hold:

  • Weight: bracket shelves hold up to 30kg, floating shelves up to 20kg
  • Walls: bracket shelves fix to any wall as long as they catch the studs, floating shelves need a solid masonry wall
  • Look: the brackets are on show, in metal or wood, as a design feature, floating shelves hide all fixings
  • Best for: books, crockery and heavier kitchen and living room storage

Sizes and finishes

Every shelf is 15cm deep and 3cm thick solid European oak, cut to your length from 30cm up to 150cm, with fully bespoke sizes for an alcove or a run of wall. Choose from seven hand-waxed finishes: Heritage, Walnut, Honey, Light Roast, Dark Roast, Whitewash and Natural. As it is natural timber, the grain and tone vary a little from shelf to shelf, which is the wood rather than a flaw.

Fixing and walls

The brackets screw to the wall and must be fixed into the studs on a plasterboard or stud wall, or into masonry on a solid wall, so the shelf and everything on it is carried safely. Fixed correctly into studs, each shelf holds up to 30kg.
