More about our Wooden Wall Hung Vanity Units

Why fit a wall hung vanity unit

A wall hung unit fixes to the wall rather than standing on the floor, and that does two useful things in a bathroom. It keeps the floor clear, so a small bathroom or cloakroom feels more open and there's nothing to clean around at floor level. And because it isn't tied to a fixed plinth height, you can set how high the basin sits to suit the people using it. It's the better choice where floor space is tight, or where you want a lighter, more contemporary look than a floor-standing unit gives.

Why the build matters more on a wall hung unit

A wall hung vanity carries its own weight, the basin and the water, all of it hanging off the wall fixings, so how it's built matters more than on a floor-standing unit. A lot of what's sold for this is veneered chipboard or MDF, which absorbs moisture at the edges and the back panel where the plumbing runs. Once the board swells the finish lifts and the carcass softens, which is the last thing you want bearing weight on a wall. Ours are made from wood and finished here for bathroom use, so they hold up where a veneered board gives way, and they can be re-waxed or sanded back over the years rather than thrown out. Where a unit is solid wood throughout, that's noted on its product page.

Fixing it to the wall

A wall hung unit needs a solid fixing. On a masonry wall that's straightforward. On a stud or plasterboard wall it has to be fixed into the studs, or into a batten set behind the plasterboard ,the fixings carry the cabinet, the basin and water, so they can't just go into the board. If you're not certain what your wall is made of, your fitter or plumber will be able to check before it goes up.

Basin, taps and sizes

The units are designed for a sit-on (countertop) basin and supplied without a basin or taps, with the top left undrilled, so you choose the basin, and your plumber drills the tap hole to suit it. Standard widths are 500, 600, 800 and 1000mm, or we'll build to a bespoke width for an awkward space. If you've got an alcove or recess that isn't a standard size, send your measurements before ordering and we'll cut it to fit.

Frequently asked questions

Why fit a wall hung vanity unit
A bathroom vanity that fixes to the wall rather than standing on the floor, leaving the floor clear underneath. It's sometimes called a floating vanity unit.
Do they come with a basin or taps?
No โ€” they're designed for a sit-on basin you choose, supplied without a basin or taps and with the top left undrilled, so your plumber fits the tap to suit.
What sizes do they come in?
500, 600, 800 and 1000mm, or a bespoke width made to your measurements.
What kind of wall can they fix to?
A solid masonry wall is ideal. On a stud or plasterboard wall they must be fixed into the studs or a batten, as the fixings carry the cabinet, basin and water.
Are they made of real wood?
Yes โ€” they're made from wood and finished here for bathroom use, not a printed veneer over board. Some units are solid wood throughout; where one is, it's noted on its product page.
Is a wall hung unit good for a small bathroom?
Yes โ€” the clear floor underneath makes a small bathroom or cloakroom feel more open and easier to clean.
