More about our Oak Floating Shelves

What is an oak floating shelf?

An oak floating shelf is a solid oak shelf that mounts on concealed fixings hidden inside the timber, so it appears to float against the wall with no visible brackets. Steel rods anchor into the wall and slide into holes pre-drilled in the back of the shelf, carrying the load out of sight. Fixed into a solid masonry wall, each shelf holds up to 20kg.

Solid oak, not an oak look

Ours are cut from solid European oak all the way through, so they can be sanded back and re-waxed over the years rather than replaced. Most high-street floating shelves are a thin oak veneer or a printed oak effect over MDF or chipboard, and the difference shows over time:

  • Material: ours are solid European oak throughout, veneer and oak-effect shelves are a thin layer over board
  • Wear and moisture: solid oak sands and re-waxes and lasts decades, veneer chips and MDF swells if water reaches it, and neither can be repaired
  • Fixing: ours use concealed steel rods, cheaper shelves often hang on a hollow batten or a visible bracket
  • Lifespan: solid oak lasts decades, an oak-effect shelf tends to last a few years

Sizes and finishes

Every shelf is 3cm thick solid European oak, cut to your length from 30cm up to 150cm as standard, with fully bespoke sizes for an alcove or chimney breast recess. Choose from seven hand-waxed finishes: Heritage, Walnut, Honey, Light Roast, Dark Roast, Whitewash and Natural. As it is natural timber, the grain and tone vary a little from shelf to shelf, which is the wood rather than a flaw.

Fixing and walls

Each shelf comes with concealed steel rods for fixing into a solid masonry wall. On a plasterboard or stud wall the supplied rods are not suitable, so you will need to source fixings rated for your wall type, as the shelf and everything on it is carried entirely by the fixings.

Made in Yorkshire

Every shelf is made to order in our Halifax workshop, ships with the concealed fixings included, and carries a lifetime structural guarantee.

All our timber is FSC certified and responsibly sourced!

Solid European oak throughout, 3cm thick, not veneer or MDF. They can be sanded and re-waxed over time rather than replaced.
How much weight can an oak floating shelf hold?
Fixed into a solid masonry wall with the concealed steel rods, each shelf holds up to 20kg.
How do the concealed fixings work?
Steel rods fix into the wall and slide into holes pre-drilled in the back of the shelf, so nothing is visible once it is up and the shelf appears to float.
Can I fit an oak floating shelf on a plasterboard wall?
The concealed rods supplied are designed for solid masonry walls. On a plasterboard or stud wall you will need to source your own fixings suitable for that wall, as the shelf and its contents are held entirely by the fixings.

What finishes are available?
Seven hand-waxed finishes: Heritage, Walnut, Honey, Light Roast, Dark Roast, Whitewash and Natural.
Can I order a bespoke size?
Yes. Send us your measurements before ordering and we cut the shelf to fit your space.
