This fire surround is made from solid pine throughout — the same timber from the front face to the back, with no MDF core or veneered surface. We use FSC-certified pine sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Pine is a softer timber than oak, which means it shows the natural character of the wood more readily — knots, grain movement and colour variation are all part of the piece rather than imperfections. It takes wax finishes well and accepts paint evenly when left unfinished.

This is rustic solid pine — no two are the same. Knots, grain movement and natural colour variation are part of what makes each surround its own piece. Some boards carry prominent knots; others have more open grain. We don't select away from character — we build around it.

Finishes look different on screens. Wax finishes are affected by your room's light — warm, south-facing rooms read the same finish very differently to north-facing rooms under cool light. The photos on this listing were taken in natural daylight. If you're trying to match existing woodwork or a specific paint colour, the Natural (unfinished) option gives you full control.

Pine can develop small surface cracks over time. This is called checking — a natural response to changes in humidity and temperature as the timber settles in your home. Hairline surface cracks are not structural and don't affect the integrity of the piece. They're a characteristic of solid timber, not a fault. They can be filled with a matching wood filler if preferred, or left as part of the natural character.

The surround will be near a heat source. Pine moves slightly with heat cycles — expanding slightly when warm, contracting when cool. This is normal behaviour for solid timber in a fireplace environment. It's why we use solid pine throughout rather than veneered board, which would delaminate under the same conditions.



This surround uses a clip-in insert system. The fixing inserts are pre-fitted to the back of the surround in the workshop — you anchor them to the wall, then the surround clips onto them. No joiner required.

Tools needed: Drill, masonry bit, spirit level, pencil.

Fitting steps:

1. Hold the surround against the wall in position and mark the fixing points through the insert holes onto the wall
2. Drill and plug the marked fixing points
3. Drive the anchor screws into the plugs, leaving the screw heads proud of the wall
4. Lift the surround and slide the clip inserts over the anchor screw heads
5. Check level, tighten if the design allows, and the surround is fitted

Most customers complete installation in under an hour.

Wall types: Fixings included are for solid brick or block masonry. For timber stud walls or plasterboard, use appropriate cavity fixings rated for the weight of the surround — not included. Locate studs before drilling where possible.

Stove and fireplace clearance: This surround is solid timber. Always check the minimum clearance distances from combustible materials specified by your stove or fireplace manufacturer before fitting. The surround must sit outside those clearance zones. If you're unsure, get in touch with your stove model and we can advise before you order.
