Product description

Oak mantel corbels are the curved brackets that sit beneath a mantel shelf, carrying the shelf above while adding that traditional, hand shaped detail to a fireplace. Ours are cut from solid oak in our Yorkshire workshop, the same timber right through with no MDF and no veneer, then finished by hand in the shade you choose.

Being solid oak, every corbel carries its own knots, cracks and grain movement. These are the natural character of real timber rather than faults, and they are part of what gives each piece its rustic, one off look, so no two corbels are ever quite the same. As the wood settles into your home it may develop a few more fine cracks and splits over time, which is completely normal for solid oak.

The gentle scroll profile is a classic mantel look, equally at home under a solid oak shelf, a chimney breast beam or a run of shelving. Fixed into the wall, a corbel takes some of the weight of the shelf above and looks the part doing it.

Because they are made to order, you can match them to a shelf you already have or pair them with one of ours. If you need a particular size, send your measurements before ordering and we will cut to it.

WOOD MATERIAL

Solid oak throughout, cut from FSC certified timber with no MDF core and no veneer, so it can be sanded and refinished over the years rather than replaced. Finished by hand in your choice of shade.

GOOD TO KNOW

Solid oak is a natural material, so every corbel is one off. The grain, knots and colour vary from piece to piece, and that is the character of real wood rather than a fault. Fix into solid masonry or into the timber studs behind plasterboard so the corbel holds securely, and remember that oak is combustible, so keep it a safe distance from a stove and in line with HETAS regulations.

INSTALLATION

Each corbel has eyelet fittings set into the back, so it hangs straight onto screws fixed into the wall, with nothing on show once it is up. Fix into solid masonry, or into the timber studs behind plasterboard, so the corbel holds securely. If it is carrying a shelf or mantel above, make sure both corbels are level so they take the weight evenly, and have them fitted by a competent person or professional. As oak is combustible, keep it a safe distance from a stove and in line with HETAS regulations.

How long will my order take

Most items are handmade and made to order. The current lead time is shown on the product page. You will also receive progress updates during production and dispatch.

What happens if there is a problem during delivery

If you experience an issue in transit, contact the customer service team and they will help you resolve it.

How do returns work

To start a return, email customer service with your order number and reason. Items must be securely packaged in the original packaging. Return shipping costs are usually paid by the customer, while defective or damaged returns are covered by Off the Grain. Refunds are processed after inspection.

Do you offer click and collect

Yes. Click and collect is available from the workshop and is free. Collection options vary by item size.

Can I get advice on finishes or matching items

Yes. Product and finish guidance is available. If you are unsure about finishes or matching pieces, contact the team and they will advise.
