A rustic solid pine fire surround, handmade in our Hollywell Green, Halifax workshop. Traditional frame profile with chunky legs and header โ€” built to frame a fireplace opening or log burner and sit flush against the chimney breast. Every surround is solid pine throughout, no MDF or veneered board.

Installs using a clip-in insert system โ€” no joiner required. The fixing points are pre-fitted to the surround; you anchor the inserts to the wall and the surround clips onto them. Most customers fit it in under half an hour.

Available in multiple widths and opening heights to fit standard and non-standard fireplace openings. Select your size from the options above. If your fireplace is non-standard or you need a bespoke cut, get in touch before ordering with your opening measurements (height and width) and we'll confirm what's possible.

Finishes

Natural โ€” unfinished pine, ready to paint in any colour. If you want to match an existing wall colour or specific paint shade (including Farrow & Ball), choose Natural and apply your paint once the surround is installed.

Light wax โ€” a pale, natural-toned wax finish that lets the pine grain and knots show clearly. Suits rooms where you want the timber to stay light.

Medium wax โ€” a warm mid-tone finish. Deepens the natural colour of the pine without darkening it significantly.

Dark wax โ€” a rich, deep finish that brings out the grain and knots and gives the surround a more aged, characterful look.

WOOD MATERIAL

This fire surround is made from solid pine throughout โ€” the same timber from the front face to the back, with no MDF core or veneered surface. We use FSC-certified pine sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Pine is a softer timber than oak, which means it shows the natural character of the wood more readily โ€” knots, grain movement and colour variation are all part of the piece rather than imperfections. It takes wax finishes well and accepts paint evenly when left unfinished.

GOOD TO KNOW

This is rustic solid pine โ€” no two are the same.ย Knots, grain movement and natural colour variation are part of what makes each surround its own piece. Some boards carry prominent knots; others have more open grain. We don't select away from character โ€” we build around it.

Finishes look different on screens.ย Wax finishes are affected by your room's light โ€” warm, south-facing rooms read the same finish very differently to north-facing rooms under cool light. The photos on this listing were taken in natural daylight. If you're trying to match existing woodwork or a specific paint colour, the Natural (unfinished) option gives you full control.

Pine can develop small surface cracks over time.ย This is called checking โ€” a natural response to changes in humidity and temperature as the timber settles in your home. Hairline surface cracks are not structural and don't affect the integrity of the piece. They're a characteristic of solid timber, not a fault. They can be filled with a matching wood filler if preferred, or left as part of the natural character.

The surround will be near a heat source.ย Pine moves slightly with heat cycles โ€” expanding slightly when warm, contracting when cool. This is normal behaviour for solid timber in a fireplace environment. It's why we use solid pine throughout rather than veneered board, which would delaminate under the same conditions.

INSTALLATION

How it goes up

It arrives in pieces: two sides, a centre piece and the shelf. The sides join to the centre piece on dowels, the assembled frame hangs on keyhole fixings โ€” two on the back of each leg โ€” and the shelf goes on last, screwed down from above with caps placed over the screw heads to conceal them.

1. Lay the sides and centre piece face down and push the dowel joints up tight. The dowels are a dry fit, so no glue is needed. Check the frame is square by measuring corner to corner both ways โ€” the two diagonals should read the same.

2. Stand the assembled frame against the wall, check it sits plumb and central on the opening, and pencil round both legs. Lay it back down, transfer the four keyhole positions inside those outlines, then drill and plug.

3. Drive a screw at each of the four points leaving about 3mm proud of the wall. With a person at each side, lift the frame and bring all four keyholes over the screw heads together. Check your level before letting go.

4. Sit the shelf on top, set the overhang even at both ends and the front, and screw down through it into the frame. Take the screws far enough in for a cap to sit over them, then place a cap into each hole to conceal the fixing.

What's included

Two sides, the centre piece and the shelf, with two keyhole fixings already on the back of each leg. Screws, wall plugs and caps to conceal the shelf fixings. You'll need your own drill, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil.

You'll need two people

From the moment the frame is assembled. It is bulky, and one person cannot hold it plumb and locate four fixings at once.

What your wall needs to be

Solid brick or block is best, with a minimum 60mm depth to fix into. On a stud wall the fixings must go into the timber uprights, not the plasterboard.

If your chimney breast is dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, common in 1980s and 1990s houses, the screws need to reach the blockwork behind. That means longer fixings than the standard kit. Send us a message before you order and we'll confirm the right approach for your wall.

Fitting above a stove

Pine is combustible, and a surround frames the opening on three sides. The safe distances are set by your stove manufacturer, not by us โ€” they're in your appliance's installation manual and they vary between models. Your installer should be HETAS registered. If you're unsure, send us your stove model and fireplace measurements and we'll help you work it out.

Please have it installed by a competent person or professional.
