More about our Kitchen Shelves

Wooden kitchen shelves โ€” what to consider before buying

Kitchen shelves take more than most โ€” steam, cooking oil, occasional knocks. Solid wood handles this better than MDF or veneered board, particularly if it's been properly sealed or waxed. Our kitchen shelves are finished in a choice of wax or oil treatments specifically chosen to hold up in that environment.

Oak is the harder of the two woods we use โ€” denser grain, more resistant to surface damage. Pine is lighter in tone and slightly softer, which means it can show marks over time but many people prefer the look. Both are solid timber, not composite.

For fixing: floating shelves use a hidden steel bracket system rated to 30kg per shelf. Bracket shelves are surface-mounted with visible fixings โ€” more traditional look, easier to install. Both can go into plasterboard with the right fixings, or directly into brick or timber stud.

All our timber is FSC certified and responsibly sourced!

Frequently asked questions

Are your kitchen shelves suitable for everyday use?
Yes. Our kitchen shelves are built from solid oak and pine and rated to hold 30kg per shelf โ€” enough for plates, jars, cookbooks and everyday kitchen items. The wood is finished in a sealed wax or oil treatment that resists the moisture and steam a kitchen produces. Solid timber handles kitchen conditions better than MDF or veneered alternatives, which can delaminate over time with heat and humidity.
Do kitchen shelves come with fixings included?
Yes. Floating shelves include the hidden steel wall bracket system and all fixings required for a standard installation. Bracket shelves come with matching fixings for the brackets. Full fitting instructions are included. For plasterboard walls, we recommend using the appropriate toggle fixings โ€” details are in the fitting guide.
Are floating shelves suitable for kitchens?
Yes, and they're one of the most practical options for kitchen storage. The hidden bracket system keeps the wall clean without exposed metalwork, and the shelf surface is fully accessible from front, top and sides. Avoid positioning directly above a hob where direct steam and heat exposure is constant โ€” a few centimetres offset is enough. For everything else โ€” spice storage, crockery, cookbooks, shelving above a worktop โ€” they work well.
Can kitchen shelves be used in smaller kitchens?
Yes โ€” wall-mounted shelving is particularly well suited to smaller kitchens where worktop space is limited. A single run of shelving 80โ€“100cm wide above a worktop clears the counter while keeping daily essentials within reach. We can make shelves to your exact wall width if standard lengths don't fit your space.
