This solid oak fireplace surround is designed to frame your fireplace or wood burner, creating a strong focal point within the room.ย Made from three pieces of solid oak, the surround includes a top mantel beam and two upright legs, forming a clean and balanced frame around the fireplace opening.

The oak features a light rustic finish, with natural grain patterns, knots and subtle variation in tone, giving each surround its own character while maintaining a refined overall look.ย Each fireplace surround is handcrafted in our Yorkshire workshop using FSC-certified oak and finished by hand to enhance the natural beauty of the timber.

Available in a range of standard sizes, the surround can also be made to bespoke dimensions to suit specific fireplace openings or chimney breast layouts.

GOOD TO KNOW

Each fireplace surround is made from solid oak and will show natural variation in grain, knots and tone. These features are not defects but part of the character of the timber.

No two surrounds are identical. You are purchasing a character piece of oak, with natural markings that give each surround a unique appearance.

If you prefer a more uniform and consistent finish, a painted or veneered option may be more suitable.

INSTALLATION

How it goes up

Three separate pieces โ€” two upright legs and a mantel beam โ€” each with keyhole fixings already set into the back. The legs stand on the floor or hearth and go on first. The mantel is then marked off the tops of the legs.

The gap between the legs and the overhang on the mantel are both yours to choose. The sum has to work: mantel length equals the outside width across both legs, plus the overhang at each end.

1. Stand both legs against the wall without fixing anything, set the spacing, and lay a level across the two tops. If it reads out, your floor or hearth is not level โ€” pack under the low leg until the tops match.

2. Fix each leg on its keyhole, leaving the screw about 3mm proud of the wall, then check across both leg tops again before going further.

3. Hold the mantel with its underside on the leg tops and the overhang even at each end, mark it, then drill and hang it the same way. It should come to rest on the legs with no gap.

What's included

Two upright legs and one mantel beam, each with keyhole fixings already in the back. Screws and wall plugs are supplied. You'll need your own drill, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil. Use the drill size marked on the wall plugs.

What your wall needs to be

Solid brick or block is best, with a minimum 60mm depth to fix into. On a stud wall the fixings must go into the timber uprights, not the plasterboard. Solid oak is heavy, so the fixing has to be into something that will carry it.

If your chimney breast is dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, common in 1980s and 1990s houses, the screws need to reach the blockwork behind. That means longer fixings than the standard kit. Send us a message before you order and we'll confirm the right approach for your wall.

Taking it down again

Mantel first, then the legs. Each piece lifts straight off its screws, so the frame can come down for decorating and go back on the same fixings.

Fitting above a stove

Oak is combustible, and a surround frames the opening on three sides. The safe distances are set by your stove manufacturer, not by us โ€” they're in your appliance's installation manual and they vary between models. Your installer should be HETAS registered. If you're unsure, send us your stove model and fireplace measurements and we'll help you work it out.

Please have it installed by a competent person or professional.
