Product description

The Rustic Oak Beam Shelf with Corbels is a solid oak shelf built from a chunky 100mm by 100mm oak beam, resting on two hand cut oak corbels. We cut each one to your chosen length, anywhere from 70cm to 180cm, so it fits your fireplace, chimney breast or wall exactly. Fixed with concealed fixings, it sits flush to the wall with no visible screws, giving you the look of a solid oak beam set above your hearth.

  • Solid oak beam with a chunky 100mm by 100mm square profile
  • Cut to your length, anywhere from 70cm to 180cm
  • Total height of 20cm including the corbels
  • Supported on two hand cut solid oak corbels
  • Concealed fixings for a clean finish with no visible screws
  • Finished in your choice of seven natural oil finishes
  • Handmade to order in our Yorkshire workshop
  • Lead time of 1 to 2 weeks

Each shelf is made from a single length of solid oak, so no two are ever the same. The grain, knots and natural character run right through the beam and its corbels, brought out with a hand applied oil finish in the shade you choose. The oil soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top, so the oak keeps its natural feel and stays easy to care for.

Because it is cut to your measurement, this shelf works as a fireplace mantel, a shelf above a wood burner, or a solid oak wall shelf anywhere in the home. The concealed fixings carry the weight discreetly while the corbels give it the traditional, hand built look of a timber beam built into the wall.

As every piece is handmade from natural solid oak, please allow a tolerance of around 10mm on all stated sizes. Small variations in dimension, colour and grain are part of the character of real wood, not a fault.

Why buy from Off the Grain

Every beam is cut, sanded and oiled by hand in Yorkshire, not mass produced. You choose the length and finish, so it fits your fireplace and your room rather than the other way round.

DELIVERY & RETURNS

This shelf is made to order, so please allow 1 to 2 weeks for us to build and finish it before it is dispatched. Each piece is wrapped and packaged by hand to reach you safely. Your order is sent on our standard delivery service, with full details on our Delivery Information page.

GOOD TO KNOW

All our oak beam shelves are handcrafted from solid oak. The timber is air dried and will display its own natural characteristics. Once installed in your home, the beam will continue to dry out as it settles into your environment and may develop small cracks and splits along its length. This is completely normal for a solid oak beam, it is part of the natural character of the wood and is not classed as a defect. Every beam in our Rustic range is well dried, so any movement is kept to a minimum. If you would prefer a beam that moves less and stays more stable, please take a look at our Modern range, which is made from kiln dried timber.

INSTALLATION

How it goes up

The beam shelf and the two corbels are separate pieces. Each one hangs on its own keyhole fixings, already set into the back before it leaves the workshop. The beam goes up first, then the corbels are marked off the beam itself.

1. Draw a level line for the top of the beam, transfer the keyhole positions onto it, then drill and plug.

2. Drive the screws leaving about 3mm proud of the wall, bring both keyholes over the heads and slide the beam down until it locks flush.

3. Hold each corbel up to the underside of the beam, pencil round it, then transfer its keyhole position inside that outline. Drill, fix, and hang the corbel the same way.

What's included

The beam shelf and two corbels, with keyhole fixings already fitted to each. Screws and wall plugs are supplied. You'll need your own drill, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil. Use the drill size marked on the wall plugs.

What your wall needs to be

Solid brick or block is best, with a minimum 60mm depth to fix into. On a stud wall the fixings must go into the timber uprights, not the plasterboard. Solid oak is heavy, especially at the longer lengths, so the fixing has to be into something that will carry it.

If your chimney breast is dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, common in 1980s and 1990s houses, the screws need to reach the blockwork behind. That means longer fixings than the standard kit. Send us a message before you order and we'll confirm the right approach for your wall.

Taking it down again

Corbels first, then the beam. Each part lifts straight back off its screws, so it can come down for decorating and go back on the same fixings.

Fitting above a stove

Oak is combustible. The safe distance is set by your stove manufacturer, not by us โ€” it's in your appliance's installation manual and it varies between models. Your installer should be HETAS registered. If you're unsure, send us your stove model and fireplace measurements and we'll help you work out what works.

Please have it installed by a competent person or professional.
