A solid pine mantel shelf supported on two corbels, made in our Yorkshire workshop. Corbels are the shaped brackets fixed beneath each end of the shelf โ€” they carry it and add the detail underneath, giving a fireplace or chimney breast the look of a built-in mantelpiece rather than a plain floating beam. They suit traditional, Victorian and period rooms, and any space where the fireplace is the main feature.

The shelf is 22cm deep and 3cm thick โ€” enough surface for candles, framed photos, a clock or seasonal display โ€” and sits on two solid pine corbels, each 90mm wide and 95mm deep. It's solid pine throughout, both shelf and corbels, with no MDF core or veneer, so the grain, knots and character are real timber and stay visible for the life of the piece. Each corbel has a keyhole fixing ring on the back, so it mounts flush to the wall โ€” all the fixings you need are included.

Made to order from 100cm to 170cm, with bespoke lengths available, so you can match it to your chimney breast exactly โ€” just send your measurement before ordering. Choose from four finishes: Natural, which is unfinished pine ready for any paint or primer, or Light, Medium and Dark wax, which bring out the grain and show the character of the wood at the shaped corbel sections.

WOOD MATERIAL

Solid FSC-certified pine throughout โ€” both the shelf and the two corbels. No MDF core, no veneer. Finished by hand in Natural (unfinished, ready to paint) or Light, Medium or Dark wax.

  • Corbels: W90mm ร— D95mm, with keyhole fixing ring
  • Lengths: 100cm to 170cm (bespoke lengths available)

  • Finishes: Natural (unfinished, paint-ready), Light wax, Medium wax, Dark wax
  • Fixings: keyhole fixing rings โ€” fixings included

GOOD TO KNOW

It's solid timber, so every shelf is one-off โ€” the grain, knots and natural variation are part of the character, not faults. The Natural finish is unfinished pine, ready for any paint or primer; the wax finishes deepen the tone and can be topped up over time. Because it's made to order, bespoke lengths are no problem โ€” just send your measurement. As with all solid wood, the timber may move very slightly with changes in humidity, which is normal for a natural material.

INSTALLATION

How it goes up

The corbels go on the wall first, on their own keyhole fixings. The shelf then sits on top and is screwed down into the corbels through the holes already drilled and countersunk in it โ€” three into each corbel, two at the back and one at the front.

1. Measure the fixing holes in the top of the shelf, working from one end. Those positions set where the corbels go, so measure them before you mark anything.

2. Draw a level line where the underside of the shelf will sit, mark your hole positions along it, and fix each corbel on its keyhole with the screw left about 3mm proud of the wall.

3. Lay a level across both corbel tops, then sit the shelf on and slide it until each set of three holes sits over the holes in the corbel top. Drive the supplied screws down through the shelf until the heads pull into the countersinks and sit flush.

What's included

The shelf, pre-drilled and countersunk, and two corbels with keyhole fixings already in the back and matching holes in the top. Screws and wall plugs are supplied. You'll need your own drill, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil. Use the drill size marked on the wall plugs.

What your wall needs to be

Solid brick or block is best, with a minimum 60mm depth to fix into. On a stud wall the fixings must go into the timber uprights, not the plasterboard.

If your chimney breast is dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, common in 1980s and 1990s houses, the screws need to reach the blockwork behind. That means longer fixings than the standard kit. Send us a message before you order and we'll confirm the right approach for your wall.

Taking it down again

Undo the screws and lift the shelf off, then lift each corbel up and off its screw. Nothing is glued, so it can come down for decorating and go back on the same fixings.

Fitting above a stove

Pine is combustible. The safe distance is set by your stove manufacturer, not by us โ€” it's in your appliance's installation manual and it varies between models. Your installer should be HETAS registered. If you're unsure, send us your stove model and fireplace measurements and we'll help you work out what works.

Please have it installed by a competent person or professional.
