Product description

Product Overview:

  • The shelf is 225mm deep โ€” enough for a jug, candles, framed photos and everyday display without anything feeling perched
  • Solid pine throughout โ€” shouldered upright detail where the legs meet the middle section, no MDF or veneered board
  • Clip-in insert installation โ€” pre-fitted to the surround, no joiner required, most customers fit in under an hour
  • Four finishes โ€” Natural (paint-ready in any colour), Light, Medium and Dark wax
  • Made to order in multiple sizes โ€” standard fireplace widths, bespoke cuts available
  • Handmade in our Halifax workshop from FSC-certified pine โ€” lifetime structural guarantee, free UK delivery

A solid pine fire surround built around a deep, usable mantel shelf โ€” made in our Yorkshire workshop. The shelf is the point of this design. At 225mm deep with a 45mm overhang on each side, it's a proper surface rather than a decorative ledge โ€” wide enough for a jug of stems, a pair of candles and still have room left.

The uprights have a clean shouldered detail where they meet the middle section โ€” a small rebated step that gives the frame a traditional character without the visual weight of corbels. It sits between the rustic plain-leg surround and the Victorian corbel style: more refined than one, less ornate than the other.

Same solid pine construction and clip-in installation as the rest of the range. Choose Natural if you're painting to match existing woodwork โ€” it's unfinished pine, ready for any paint or primer once installed.

GOOD TO KNOW

The shelf is the feature โ€” and it will develop character.ย At 225mm deep, the mantel shelf is a working surface. Pine will show marks, ring stains from candles and small scratches over time. This is what a solid wood surface does. Re-waxing brings it back; the marks are part of the piece.

Finishes look different on screens.ย Wax finishes read differently depending on your room's light. The photos were taken in natural daylight. If you're matching existing woodwork or a specific paint colour, choose Natural and apply your own finish once installed.

Pine checks over time.ย Small surface cracks can develop as the timber settles โ€” a natural response to changes in humidity and temperature. Not structural, not a fault. Fill with matching wood filler if preferred, or leave as part of the character.

This surround is near a heat source.ย Pine moves slightly with heat cycles. Solid pine moves as one piece โ€” which is why we use it rather than veneered board, which would delaminate under the same conditions.

INSTALLATION

How it goes up

It arrives in pieces: two sides, a centre piece and the shelf. The sides join to the centre piece on dowels, the assembled frame hangs on keyhole fixings โ€” two on the back of each leg โ€” and the shelf goes on last, screwed down from above with caps placed over the screw heads to conceal them.

1. Lay the sides and centre piece face down and push the dowel joints up tight. The dowels are a dry fit, so no glue is needed. Check the frame is square by measuring corner to corner both ways โ€” the two diagonals should read the same.

2. Stand the assembled frame against the wall, check it sits plumb and central on the opening, and pencil round both legs. Lay it back down, transfer the four keyhole positions inside those outlines, then drill and plug.

3. Drive a screw at each of the four points leaving about 3mm proud of the wall. With a person at each side, lift the frame and bring all four keyholes over the screw heads together. Check your level before letting go.

4. Sit the shelf on top, set the overhang even at both ends and the front, and screw down through it into the frame. Take the screws far enough in for a cap to sit over them, then place a cap into each hole to conceal the fixing.

What's included

Two sides, the centre piece and the shelf, with two keyhole fixings already on the back of each leg. Screws, wall plugs and caps to conceal the shelf fixings. You'll need your own drill, a screwdriver, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil.

You'll need two people

From the moment the frame is assembled. It is bulky, and one person cannot hold it plumb and locate four fixings at once.

What your wall needs to be

Solid brick or block is best, with a minimum 60mm depth to fix into. On a stud wall the fixings must go into the timber uprights, not the plasterboard.

If your chimney breast is dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, common in 1980s and 1990s houses, the screws need to reach the blockwork behind. That means longer fixings than the standard kit. Send us a message before you order and we'll confirm the right approach for your wall.

Fitting above a stove

Pine is combustible, and a surround frames the opening on three sides. The safe distances are set by your stove manufacturer, not by us โ€” they're in your appliance's installation manual and they vary between models. Your installer should be HETAS registered. If you're unsure, send us your stove model and fireplace measurements and we'll help you work it out.

Please have it installed by a competent person or professional.
