More about our Wooden Coat Racks

Why choose solid wood?

A coat rack takes daily contact โ€” hooks loaded with coats and bags, pegs pulled at angles, the frame knocked by anyone passing in a narrow hallway. Most mass-produced coat racks are built on an MDF or chipboard backing with a painted or veneered surface. MDF is stable in controlled conditions, but hallways are one of the most demanding environments in the house: temperature swings as the front door opens and closes, condensation from wet coats, humidity changes through the seasons. MDF swells at edges and corners, the surface paint cracks along joints, and fixings start to work loose as the board moves.

Solid pine and solid oak don't have the same problem. The timber moves slightly with humidity, but the movement is consistent across the whole piece โ€” there's no core and surface working against each other. Hooks and fixings sit in real timber, not a compressed board that degrades under load. Our coat racks are solid throughout: the backboard, the rails, the brackets. If a hook works loose after years of use, it can be re-tightened or replaced. That's not true of a rack where the thread has stripped out of softboard.

Types of wooden coat racks

The range covers several distinct formats, and the right one depends on your wall space, hallway size and what you're actually hanging.

Wall mounted coat racks (2โ€“12 hooks): The core range. Solid pine or oak backboard with cast iron or wooden hooks. Available in 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hook versions โ€” the wider racks suit family hallways or utility rooms where multiple people are hanging coats at once. Oak versions have a cleaner grain and suit contemporary interiors; rustic pine has more character and suits farmhouse or country-style hallways.

Coat racks with shelf: Same construction as the standard wall mounted range but with a solid wood shelf above the hooks. Useful if you have no hall table โ€” keys, post and small bags sit on the shelf rather than the floor. The shelf adds around 12cm to the overall height of the fitting.

Shaker peg rails: A longer rail format with traditional shaker-style pegs rather than hooks. Better for rooms where you want hanging storage across a full wall โ€” useful in kitchens, utility rooms and bedrooms as well as hallways. Pegs handle hats, bags and lightweight items well; hooks carry heavier coats more securely.

Painted coat racks: All of the above are available in painted finishes โ€” any colour, including Farrow & Ball shades to order. Manor House Grey and Stiffkey Blue are the most popular. Painted finishes suit more contemporary interiors or where you want the coat rack to blend with existing woodwork colour.

Hallway storage with hooks: Bench-and-hook combinations for hallways where you want seating, under-bench storage and coat hanging in one unit. More suited to a larger hallway entrance than a narrow corridor.

How to choose the right coat rack for your space

The most common mistake when buying a coat rack is underestimating how many hooks you actually need. A family of four needs at least 6โ€“8 hooks in regular use โ€” 4 for coats, plus extras for bags, hats and the coats of anyone visiting. A rack with 4 hooks on a busy hallway fills up immediately. If in doubt, go wider rather than narrower: an 8-hook rack used with 5 hooks hanging is easier to live with than a 4-hook rack that's permanently overloaded.

Width and wall space: measure the available wall between the door frame, any windows and adjacent furniture before ordering. Our standard racks run from around 40cm (2 hook) to just over 160cm (12 hook). If you need something in between, most styles are available made to order โ€” get in touch with your exact dimensions.

Hook height matters. The rack should be mounted so the lowest hanging coat clears the floor by at least 10โ€“15cm. Most coats hang around 110โ€“120cm, so mounting the rack at 150โ€“160cm from the floor gives clearance for longer coats without raising the hooks so high they're awkward to reach for children.

Shelf or no shelf: if you have a hall table or sideboard in the hallway, the standard rack is fine. If not, a coat rack with a shelf gives you a surface for keys, post and bags without needing an additional piece of furniture. The shelf is approximately 20cm deep โ€” enough for everyday items but not deep enough to create an obstacle in a narrow space.

Wooden coat racks handmade in Yorkshire

All our coat racks are made in our Halifax workshop from FSC-certified solid timber โ€” pine and oak sourced from sustainably managed forests. Every piece carries a lifetime structural guarantee: if a joint fails or a fixing pulls through the timber under normal use, we'll repair or replace it.

Most styles are available made to order in custom widths and hook counts if the standard sizes don't work for your wall. We can also match painted finishes to specific Farrow & Ball or Little Greene colours if you're working to an existing scheme. Lead time on made-to-order pieces is typically 1โ€“2 weeks. Get in touch before ordering if you have a specific size or finish in mind.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a wooden coat rack with shelf be in a hallway?
Choose a size based on your wall space and the number of hooks you need โ€” we offer racks from 2 up to 12 hooks. All our coat racks have a 9 cm shelf depth, ideal for keys, plants or photos.
How high should a wall-mounted coat rack be installed?
We recommend mounting the rack so the hooks sit around 140โ€“150 cm from the floor for adults, or slightly lower (around 120 cm) if children will use it.
Can the shelf on a coat rack hold heavy items like bags or plants?
Yes โ€” our racks are built from solid oak or pine and fixed to the wall with hidden fittings. Theyโ€™re designed for everyday use with coats, bags, keys and small decorative items.
What is the best material for a coat rack โ€” oak vs pine vs painted wood?
Solid oak is naturally durable and full of character; pine is lighter and more cost-effective; painted finishes add colour while keeping the charm of real wood.
How many hooks do I need on my coat rack?
For smaller homes, 2โ€“4 hooks are often enough; for families, 8โ€“12 hooks give plenty of space for coats, bags and scarves.
How do I install your wall-mounted coat racks securely?
Each rack comes with pre-drilled holes and fixings. Simply mark your points, drill into a solid wall or plug, attach the rack, and fit the hooks back over the fixings for a clean finish.
Are your coat racks handmade in the UK?
Yes โ€” every rack is handcrafted in our Yorkshire workshop by our small team of joiners using sustainably sourced timber.
Do you offer custom sizes or finishes for coat racks?
Yes โ€” we can make custom lengths and finishes on request. Just get in touch before ordering and weโ€™ll confirm whatโ€™s possible.
