More About Our Wooden Wall Shelves

What is a wooden wall shelf?ย

A wooden wall shelf is a solid timber shelf mounted directly to a wall surface, providing storage or display space without floor furniture. Made from solid oak or pine, wall shelves fix into masonry or timber studs using either concealed fixings (floating style) or visible brackets. Every wooden wall shelf at Off the Grain is handmade to order in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Floating Wooden Shelvesย

Clean, minimal and popular in living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Concealed fixings mean the timber sits on the wall with no visible brackets or supports โ€” just wood. Available in oak and pine, from compact mini ledges to full-length kitchen shelves. The most popular wooden shelf style in this collection.

Wooden Shelves with Brackets

ย For heavier loads and a more industrial or traditional look. Bracket shelves combine a solid timber board with matching metal or wooden brackets โ€” the structural support is visible and becomes part of the aesthetic. Popular in kitchens, utility rooms and home offices where reliability and style both matter.

Wooden Corner Shelvesย

For unused corner spaces. A wooden corner shelf sits flush into the corner of a room, providing storage without taking any floor space or wall run. Available in oak and pine as individual shelves or sets of three. Suits living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and hallways.

Wooden Shelves for Bathrooms

ย Solid timber finished by hand. Suitable for bathrooms with normal humidity โ€” avoid prolonged direct water contact to protect the finish. Compact floating styles are the most popular bathroom choice, keeping surfaces clear without adding bathroom furniture.

How to Choose the Right Wooden Shelf

The right shelf depends on where it's going and what it needs to hold. A floating oak shelf suits living rooms, kitchens and offices for medium loads like books, plates and jars. A bracket shelf is the better choice for kitchens, utility rooms and anywhere heavier storage is needed. Corner shelves work well in living rooms, bedrooms and hallways for lighter display items. Ladder shelves suit living rooms and bedrooms for ornaments, books and plants where the load is light.

Frequently asked questions

Are your wooden shelves suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Yes, our shelves are made from solid timber and finished by hand, making them suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. Just avoid direct water contact and theyโ€™ll stay looking their best.
How much weight can your floating shelves hold?
When installed into solid masonry or timber studs, our floating shelves can comfortably hold everyday items such as plates, jars, books and dรฉcor. Weight capacity always depends on wall type and fixings.
Do your shelves come with brackets and fixings?
Yes. Floating shelves include concealed fixings, while bracket shelves arrive with the metal brackets shown. All shelves come with the correct fixings for standard installations.
Can your shelves be fitted to plasterboard or stud walls?
Yes, most of our shelves can be installed on plasterboard walls, but weight capacity will be reduced compared to masonry walls. For plasterboard, we recommend using specialist heavy-duty fixings or securing into studs for the strongest hold. Always check your wall type before installation. Please note that our floating wall shelves are not suitable.
Do you offer bespoke sizes or custom lengths?
All of our shelves are handmade to order, so bespoke lengths are usually possible. If you need a specific size, just get in touch and we can advise on pricing and suitability.
What timber do you use for your shelves?
We work with solid oak and pine, all sustainably sourced and finished by hand. Each piece of wood has its own natural grain, character and markings.
Will the shelves show knots or natural wood features?
Yes, this is part of the charm of real wood. You may see natural grain patterns, small knots or slight colour variation. These details are not defects; theyโ€™re what make each shelf unique.
Can I use your shelves as storage shelves as well as display shelves?
Absolutely. Customers commonly use them for storing jars, bowls, books and toiletries, as well as for displaying photos, candles and decorative pieces.
Do you make small shelves for plants or compact spaces?
Yes, our small wooden shelves and mini ledges are ideal for plants, candles and tight areas where a full-length shelf wonโ€™t fit.
How should I care for my wooden shelves?
A light dust and occasional wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth is all they need. Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged water contact to protect the finish over time.
