Solid wood desks handmade to order in our Halifax workshop, in oak and pine on steel hairpin and pin legs. A desk takes more daily wear than almost any piece in the house — leaning, typing, things dragged across the top — and solid timber handles that in a way veneered MDF doesn't. Every desk is built from solid wood and cut to the size your room needs.

Why a solid wood desk lasts

The wear on a desk happens at the edges and the surface, exactly where veneered MDF fails first: chipping at the front lip and scratching through to the chipboard underneath. A solid wood desk has no veneer to lift — the surface is the same timber all the way through, so a scratch sands out rather than ruining it. It's the difference between a desk you replace in a few years and one you keep.

Desk styles and storage

Most of our desks are a clean computer or writing desk on steel legs — hairpin, box-frame or single-pin — for a modern, uncluttered look that suits a home office or study. If you need storage built in, the Ashwicke desk has it; for everything else you can keep the surface clear and pair the desk with our office shelving. Because each one is made to order, we can talk through storage options before we build.

Choosing a desk for your home office

Three things to get right: depth (aim for around 60cm so a monitor sits at a comfortable distance), width (enough for your screen plus a working area to the side), and where the desk sits (against a wall keeps cables tidy and out of sight). As every desk is made to order, you can set the size to your space rather than work around a standard one.

Frequently asked questions

Are solid wood desks better than MDF?

For durability, yes. The wear on a desk is concentrated at the edges and surface, where veneered MDF chips and scratches through to the board beneath. A solid wood desk is the same timber throughout, so marks sand back rather than ruining the top.

Do your desks have drawers or storage?

The Ashwicke desk has built-in storage; the rest are clean-surface desks on steel legs. As everything is made to order, get in touch if you'd like to talk through adding storage, and pair any desk with our office shelving for more.

What size should a home office desk be?

Around 60cm deep is comfortable for a monitor and keyboard, with the width set by your screen and working space. We cut every desk to your measurements.

Oak or pine for a desk?

Oak is harder and more hard-wearing with a finer grain; pine is lighter, more affordable and takes paint well. Both are solid wood throughout — no veneer, no chipboard core.
