More About Our Mantel Beams

What is a mantel beam?

ย A mantel beam is a solid timber beam fixed above a fireplace or log burner, providing a shelf for display while creating a natural focal point on the chimney breast wall. Made from solid oak or pine with a floating shelf profile, a mantel beam sits flush to the wall on concealed fixings. Our mantel beams are handmade to order in Halifax, West Yorkshire, available in lengths from 60cm to 240cm.

Oak Mantel Beams

ย Oak is the most popular material for mantel beams. Naturally dense and slow-burning, solid oak handles the warmth above a fireplace better than lighter timbers and develops a richer character over time. Available in heritage oak and walnut finishes. The grain, knots and colour variation on each beam are unique to that piece.

Rustic Mantel Beams

ย For a more characterful, traditional look. Our rustic pine mantel beams are finished in light, medium or dark wax, showcasing the natural knots and grain variation of the timber. Popular above log burners and wood-burning stoves in country homes, cottages and farmhouse kitchens.

Floating Mantel Shelfย

A floating mantel shelf uses concealed fixings โ€” the timber sits on the wall with no visible brackets or supports. The clean, uncluttered profile suits contemporary interiors where a traditional chunky beam would feel too heavy.

Fireplace Beam vs Floating Mantel Shelf

The main difference is profile and style. A fireplace beam is chunky and rustic โ€” the heavier, more traditional choice that suits country, farmhouse and cottage interiors. A floating mantel shelf has a slimmer, cleaner profile that works better in contemporary, Scandi and modern homes. Both use the same concealed fixings into solid masonry, and both are available in solid oak or pine โ€” so the choice comes down entirely to the look you want above your fireplace.

How to Choose the Right Mantel Beam Size

Measure the width of your fireplace opening and add 15โ€“20cm either side โ€” this is the minimum beam length. For a chimney breast that spans the full wall, match the beam to the chimney breast width. Standard depth is 15cm, sufficient for a candle, photo frame or small plant. For deeper display needs, a 20cm depth is available on request.

Why Choose Off the Grain?

Every mantel beam is handmade to order in Halifax, West Yorkshire โ€” lead time 3โ€“5 days. Solid timber throughout, no MDF or veneer. All wood FSC certified. Available in lengths from 60cm to 240cm. Bespoke lengths available โ€” get in touch with your fireplace measurements and we will confirm the right size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mantel beam and a mantel shelf?
A mantel beam is typically a thicker section of timber, designed to sit above a fireplace or log burner and give the appearance of a structural beam. A mantel shelf tends to be slimmer and flatter. Both styles act as a focal point above the fire and provide practical display space โ€” the right choice usually comes down to how much depth and presence you want on the chimney breast.
Can a mantel beam be installed above a wood burning stove?
Yes โ€” installing a mantel beam above a wood burning stove is one of the most popular uses. It frames the stove opening and creates a natural shelf above the fire. When installing, always follow the clearance guidelines provided by your stove manufacturer to ensure safe positioning.
Are your fireplace mantel beams made from solid wood?
Yes. Every mantel beam in our collection is made from solid timber โ€” either oak or pine โ€” handcrafted in our Yorkshire workshop. We use solid wood rather than MDF or veneers so the natural grain, knots and character of the timber remain visible throughout the life of the piece.
What size mantel beam should I choose?
As a general guide, choose a beam slightly wider than your fireplace opening so it frames the chimney breast and creates a balanced look. Our most popular sizes run from 120cm to 150cm for standard fireplace widths. If you're unsure, our team is happy to advise based on your measurements.
Can a mantel beam be used as a shelf?
Absolutely. A fireplace mantel beam doubles as a shelf โ€” many customers use theirs to display candles, framed photos, plants or seasonal decorations. Because the beam mounts directly to the wall, it provides usable surface space without taking up floor space, which makes it particularly practical in smaller living rooms.
