Why choose solid wood?
A coffee table takes more daily punishment than almost any other piece of furniture in the house โ feet on the surface, cups without coasters, kids using the edge to push themselves up. Most mid-price tables are built on an MDF or chipboard core with a veneer surface. The veneer looks fine when new. Under daily use it chips and lifts at corners and edges, and once the surface film goes it doesn't recover. Water marks and scratches sink into the exposed substrate.
Solid wood dents rather than chips. A bad knock might leave a mark, but the surface can be sanded back and re-waxed โ something that's not possible with a veneer. Our coffee tables are built from solid pine or solid oak throughout: the top, the frame, the legs. No MDF core, no veneer on top.
Types of rustic coffee tables
Farmhouse and pine โ the Saltburn and Richmond are built from solid pine with visible grain and natural knots. The Saltburn has a thick plank top and chunky turned legs; the Richmond is lower-slung with a more open frame. Both suit rustic, farmhouse or country interiors.
Solid oak โ the Pickering, Harrogate and Horton are made from clear-grained oak with a lighter, cleaner finish. Oak is denser and finer-grained than pine, sitting more comfortably in contemporary or mid-century interiors without the character marks of the farmhouse range.
Round tables โ the Ripon Rustic Round in pine and the Solid Oak Round work well in rooms where you want to soften rectangular shapes or where floor space is limited. A practical choice for homes with young children.
Hairpin leg โ a lighter, more industrial look. Solid wood top with slimline metal legs for rooms that want solid wood quality without the farmhouse bulk.
How to choose the right coffee table for your space
Aim for a table roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa โ enough visual weight without dominating the room. Too large and the room feels cluttered; too small and it floats in the middle doing nothing useful.
Height matters more than most people consider. Most of our coffee tables sit between 40โ48cm tall โ roughly level with or just below a standard sofa cushion. Too low and it's uncomfortable to use; too high and it feels like a desk.
Leave at least 30โ40cm clearance between the table and your sofa. If space is tight, a narrower plank-top style like the Saltburn gives you the surface without the footprint. For rooms with young children, a round table removes corners from the equation entirely.
