Choosing the right coat hook: wood and hook style

Two choices decide how a set of coat hooks looks and performs: the wood of the backboard, and the hooks themselves.

The wood. Solid oak is the hard-wearing choice. It takes daily knocks, ambers gently over the years, and suits both traditional and modern hallways. Pine is lighter and more affordable, and it takes paint well, so it's the one to choose if you want a painted backboard to match your walls or woodwork. Both are solid timber, never veneer.

The hooks. Turned wooden hooks have a softer, Shaker-style look and are gentle on coats and knitwear. Black metal hooks hold more weight and more layers, and give a cleaner, more industrial feel. If you're hanging heavy winter coats and bags daily, metal hooks earn their place; for a lighter, more traditional look, wood is the one.

If you only need somewhere to hang a couple of coats, a peg rail or single pegs do the job with the slimmest profile. For a busy family hallway, a longer backboard with more hooks, or a coat hook with a shelf for keys and post, will serve you better.

Coat hooks for every room

Hallway. The hardest-working spot in the house. Mount a row at around 170cm so coats hang clear of the floor, and go for sturdy hooks and an oak backboard that can take the daily traffic. A version with a shelf gives keys and post a home too.

Utility and boot rooms. Here you're hanging heavier, often damp coats, dog leads and bags. Choose robust hooks โ€” metal hooks hold the most โ€” and a painted finish that wipes clean and shrugs off the knocks of a working room.

Children's rooms and lower halls. Fit a second row at around 100cm so children can hang their own coats and bags. Rounded wooden hooks are the gentler choice at child height. It's the simplest way to stop the daily pile of school coats on the floor.

Every set is made to order, which means you're not stuck with a fixed size. Choose the number of hooks, the length of the backboard, the wood and the finish, and we cut it to suit your wall. If the gap between a door and a corner is an awkward width, we'll make a board to fit it exactly rather than leave you compromising on a standard size.

Why choose solid wood?

A coat hook takes a specific kind of daily abuse โ€” coats pulled off at angles, bags hanging on a single peg, kids yanking their things down on the way out the door. Most budget hooks are fixed into an MDF or softboard backing that looks fine when it goes up and starts to fail within a few years. The fixings loosen as the board flexes; the surface chips where it takes repeated contact. Once the substrate starts to go, there's no recovering it.

Solid oak and pine don't work like that. The hooks are fixed into real timber throughout โ€” backboard, rail, bracket. Under the kind of daily loading a hallway produces, solid timber holds its fixings, doesn't flex and doesn't degrade at the surface. If a hook needs retightening after years of use, it's going back into timber, not into a compressed board that's already given up.

Types of wooden coat hooks

Wall mounted coat hooks: A solid timber backboard with a row of hooks โ€” the cleanest format for a hallway. One set of fixings into the wall hides behind the backboard; the hooks hang consistently without individual drilling. Sits at 160โ€“170cm from the floor for adults; we can make a lower backboard at 110โ€“120cm for children's rooms or a second row in a family hallway.

Coat hooks with shelf: The same solid backboard and hooks but with a shelf above โ€” practical for keys, post, a basket or a small plant. The most useful format when wall space is limited and you want one unit to do two jobs. Solid oak throughout in natural finish.

Decorative backboard styles: Where the backboard is as much part of the look as the hooks โ€” shaker-style or shaped boards that suit period hallways and utility rooms where the hook arrangement is meant to be noticed. Still solid timber throughout, no MDF core.

How to choose the right coat hooks for your space

Oak or pine: Oak is the harder-wearing option and suits the widest range of interiors โ€” it works in contemporary hallways as well as traditional ones, and the grain and knots develop character rather than showing wear. Pine is slightly softer with more visible grain movement and a warmer, more rustic feel โ€” the right choice for country, cottage and farmhouse interiors where a bit more character in the timber is the point.

Room by room: In a hallway, the main job is coat storage โ€” prioritise hook count and height. Mount the backboard so hooks sit at 160โ€“170cm from the floor for adults, with a lower second board at 110โ€“120cm if children are using it. In a utility room, you need more hooks than you think and the look matters less โ€” wider boards with higher hook counts for outdoor gear and workwear. In a children's bedroom or playroom, lower mounting height matters most โ€” hooks at 100โ€“120cm that a child can reach independently are more useful than hooks at adult height that need help every time.

Hook count: One hook per person plus two extras is the working minimum. A family of four needs at least 6โ€“8 hooks in regular use โ€” a 4-hook board fills immediately and there's nowhere for a visitor's coat. Go wider if the wall space is there.
