More About Our Bracket Shelves

What is a bracket shelf?

A bracket shelf is a wall-mounted shelf where the support brackets are visible, combining a solid timber board with metal or wooden brackets fixed to the wall. Unlike floating shelves which hide their fixings, bracket shelves make the structural support part of the design. Our wooden bracket shelves are handmade from solid oak or pine in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Oak Bracket Shelves

Solid oak boards paired with matching brackets โ€” either metal for an industrial look or wooden for a more traditional finish. Oak is dense and durable, holding up to heavier everyday loads than pine. Popular in kitchens for crockery and cookbooks, and in home offices for books and equipment.

Industrial Wooden Shelf with Steel Brackets

Solid timber board with steel brackets โ€” a popular combination for kitchens, bathrooms and industrial-style interiors. The contrast between warm wood grain and dark steel brackets works well in modern and urban homes. Available in heritage oak and walnut finishes.

Wooden Shelf with Wooden Brackets

For a more traditional or country look. Matching solid timber brackets and board, finished in the same colour, give a unified appearance that suits farmhouse kitchens, hallways and living rooms. Available in oak and pine.

Floating Shelf vs Bracket Shelf โ€” Which Should You Choose?

The choice comes down to how much you need to store and how you want the shelf to look. A floating shelf hides its fixings completely โ€” clean, minimal and suited to living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms where a contemporary or Scandi finish matters more than heavy load capacity. A bracket shelf makes the structural support part of the design โ€” the brackets are visible and become part of the aesthetic, giving a higher load capacity that suits kitchens, utility rooms and offices. For lighter display storage, go floating. For heavier everyday use, go brackets.

How to Choose the Right Bracket Shelfย

For kitchens: choose a board depth of at least 20cm to fit plates and jars comfortably. For books: a 15cm depth suits standard paperbacks; 20cm for hardbacks and larger volumes. For bracket style: metal suits industrial and modern interiors; wooden brackets suit traditional and country styles.

Why Choose Off the Grain?ย

Every bracket shelf is handmade to order in Halifax, West Yorkshire โ€” lead time 3โ€“5 days. Solid timber throughout, no MDF or veneer. All wood FSC certified. Fixings included. Bespoke board lengths available on request.

Frequently asked questions

Are your wooden shelves suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
bracket shelves are suitable for kitchens and bathrooms with normal ventilation. The timber handles everyday humidity without issue. For wet rooms or poorly ventilated bathrooms, a waxed finish provides more surface protection than bare wood. Avoid prolonged direct water contact on unfinished surfaces.
How much weight can your floating shelves hold?
floating shelves โ€” typically 25โ€“40kg depending on bracket type, number of brackets, and fixing method. For maximum load capacity, fix brackets into solid masonry using the supplied fixings. On plasterboard, use cavity anchors rated for the intended load and fix into wall studs where possible.
Do your shelves come with brackets and fixings?
Yes โ€” all shelves in this collection include the brackets and wall fixings. Full fitting instructions are included with every order. The fixings supplied are sized for standard solid masonry walls. For plasterboard or stud walls, use cavity anchors rated for your intended load.
Can your shelves be fitted to plasterboard or stud walls?
Yes โ€” use cavity anchors rather than the supplied wall plugs, which are sized for masonry. Cavity anchors expand behind the board to create a secure fixing. For the strongest result, locate and fix directly into the timber studs behind the plasterboard.
Do you offer bespoke sizes or custom lengths?
Yes โ€” everything is made to order, so specific board lengths and depths are always possible. Standard sizes are listed in the collection; if you need a non-standard length, contact us with measurements and we'll confirm what's possible before you order.
What timber do you use for your shelves?
All our bracket shelves use solid timber โ€” either oak or pine. No MDF, particleboard or veneer. Oak is denser, more durable and develops a warm patina over time. Pine is lighter, more affordable, and takes paint and wax well. Both are FSC-certified.
Will the shelves show knots or natural wood features?
Yes โ€” knots, grain variation and colour differences are natural characteristics of solid timber. Each shelf is unique. If you want a uniform finish, a painted MDF shelf would suit better. If natural character matters to you, solid oak or pine delivers something manufactured materials can't replicate.
Can I use your shelves as storage shelves as well as display shelves?
Yes โ€” bracket shelves handle practical storage well. For heavier items like books, jars and kitchen crockery, choose a board depth of at least 20cm and fix into solid masonry. Bracket shelves carry significantly more weight than a floating shelf equivalent.
Do you make small shelves for plants or compact spaces?
Wipe with a lightly damp cloth for everyday cleaning โ€” avoid soaking the wood or using harsh cleaners. For wax-finished shelves, a light re-wax once or twice a year keeps the surface protected. For oiled finishes, a periodic re-oil maintains appearance. Keep shelves away from prolonged direct sunlight.
