More about our Bracket Shelves

Why choose solid wood?

Bracket shelves are working furniture โ€” they carry weight day in, day out, and the board is on display. Most mass-market shelving boards are MDF with a veneer surface: the veneer chips and lifts at edges and corners, and under load on longer spans the board develops a visible bow over time. Once the surface film is damaged on a veneered shelf, there's no recovering it.

Solid oak and pine boards don't have a surface to lift โ€” the timber is the same material all the way through. They dent rather than chip, and a worn or marked surface can be sanded and re-oiled. Oak in particular holds its shape well across longer spans under heavy load, which is why it's the better choice for kitchen shelves carrying crockery, jars and cookbooks.

Types of bracket shelves

Oak bracket shelves: Solid oak board with either metal or matching oak brackets. Dense and durable โ€” holds up to heavier everyday loads better than pine and holds its shape over longer spans. Popular for kitchens, home offices and living room bookshelves. Available in heritage oak and walnut finishes.

Industrial shelf with steel brackets: Solid timber board paired with dark steel brackets โ€” a contrast that works well in kitchens, utility rooms and urban or industrial-style interiors. The steel brackets are structural and part of the aesthetic. Available in heritage oak and walnut finishes.

Traditional shelf with wooden brackets: Matching solid timber board and brackets in the same finish. Gives a unified look that suits farmhouse kitchens, country hallways and living rooms. Available in natural wax or painted finishes.

Pine bracket shelves: Solid pine board with matching wooden or metal brackets. More character and visible grain than oak, with a warmer tone. Suits rustic and farmhouse interiors.

How to choose the right bracket shelf for your space

The choice between bracket and floating comes down to load and look. Bracket shelves carry more weight and make the support part of the design. If you're shelving a kitchen, utility room or home office with heavy items, bracket shelves are the right call. For display storage in living rooms and bedrooms where a cleaner look matters more than load capacity, floating shelves suit better.

Board depth: for kitchens, choose at least 20cm to fit plates and jars comfortably. For books, 15cm suits paperbacks; 20cm for hardbacks and larger volumes. For general display, 15cm is enough.

Bracket style: metal brackets suit industrial, modern and contemporary interiors. Wooden brackets suit traditional, farmhouse and country styles. On spans over 80cm, use three brackets rather than two โ€” one at each end and one in the middle โ€” to prevent any bow developing under load over time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a bracket shelf and a floating shelf?
A bracket shelf has visible support brackets that are part of the design. A floating shelf uses concealed fixings. Bracket shelves carry more weight and suit kitchens, offices and utility rooms. Floating shelves suit rooms where a cleaner look matters more than heavy load capacity.
Can I get a custom length bracket shelf?
Yes. All our bracket shelves are made to order and bespoke board lengths are available. Get in touch with your measurements before ordering and we'll confirm pricing. Lead time is the same โ€” 3โ€“5 days.
What bracket styles are available?
Dark steel brackets for an industrial look, and solid timber brackets for a traditional finish. Steel suits modern and urban interiors; wooden brackets suit farmhouse and country rooms.
How much weight can a bracket shelf hold?
More than a floating shelf on a comparable fixing, because the load transfers through visible brackets fixed directly to the wall. Actual weight limit depends on wall type and bracket spacing. For heavy kitchen loads, use three brackets on spans over 80cm and fix into solid masonry.
How long does delivery take?
All bracket shelves are made to order with a 3โ€“5 day lead time. Free UK delivery on all orders over ยฃ200.
