More about our Wooden Bathroom Shelves

Why choose solid wood?

Bathrooms are harder on shelving than most rooms. Steam from showers, temperature changes, residual moisture from wet surfaces โ€” all of it affects how wood behaves over time. The difference between a wooden bathroom shelf that lasts and one that warps within a year comes down to two things: the species of wood and how it's finished.

Oak is the better performer in humid conditions. It has a naturally tight, dense grain that resists moisture penetration better than softer timbers. Our oak bathroom shelves are finished in a sealed wax or hardwax oil that sits in the surface of the wood rather than just coating it, giving protection that holds up through regular bathroom use. Pine is a lighter, more open-grained timber โ€” it works well in bathrooms when properly finished, costs less and suits a more rustic aesthetic.

Both are solid timber throughout, which matters. MDF and veneered board absorb moisture at edges and joints, causing swelling and delamination over time. Solid wood does not have this problem. Once a veneered bathroom shelf starts to swell at the edges, there's no fixing it.

Types of wooden bathroom shelves

Oak floating bathroom shelves: Concealed steel bracket system โ€” no visible fixings, flush to the wall. Rated to 20kg per shelf. Dense oak grain with sealed hardwax oil finish holds up to bathroom humidity better than pine. Available in heritage oak and walnut finishes.

Rustic pine bathroom shelves: More open-grained than oak with visible knots and natural character. Sealed in wax for bathroom use. Costs less than oak and suits farmhouse, cottage and rustic bathrooms where natural wood character matters. Available in light, medium or dark wax.

Bracket bathroom shelves: Visible wooden or metal brackets fixed to the wall โ€” simpler to install and more forgiving if you need to reposition after installation. Wooden brackets suit a traditional bathroom aesthetic; metal brackets suit a more industrial or contemporary finish.

Small and cloakroom shelves: Compact shelves for cloakrooms, above basins and narrow bathroom walls where a full-length shelf would dominate. Our mini oak ledge works particularly well in smaller spaces. Bespoke dimensions available on request.

How to choose the right bathroom shelf for your space

Most bathroom shelves fit one of two roles: over-toilet storage, or a shelf beside or above a basin. For over-toilet use, 60โ€“80cm wide and 14โ€“19cm deep is the most practical range โ€” wide enough to hold baskets or bottles, shallow enough not to catch anyone leaning back. For basin shelves, shorter runs of 40โ€“60cm tend to work better in tighter spaces.

Floating vs bracket: in smaller bathrooms and cloakrooms, floating shelves tend to look less busy โ€” no visible hardware means the shelf sits cleanly on the wall. In larger bathrooms where the shelf is a feature, either works well. Bracket shelves are also more forgiving to install โ€” if you need to adjust the position after fitting, you're removing brackets rather than the whole concealed system.

If you're fitting into an alcove or a specific recess, we make shelves to exact measurements. Standard sizes rarely fit awkward bathroom layouts perfectly โ€” contact us with your measurements before ordering.

Wooden bathroom shelves handmade in Yorkshire

Every shelf is handmade to order in our Halifax workshop from FSC-certified solid oak or pine. All bathroom shelves are sealed with hardwax oil or wax finish before dispatch โ€” not a coating applied after assembly, but a finish worked into the surface of the timber. Lead time is 3โ€“5 days. Fixings are included for standard solid wall installations. All pieces carry a lifetime structural guarantee.

Bespoke dimensions are available across the range โ€” if standard widths don't match your alcove or wall, get in touch with your measurements before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Will a solid wood shelf warp in a bathroom?
Not if it's properly sealed. Our shelves are finished in hardwax oil or wax that's worked into the surface of the timber before dispatch. Oak is the more resistant species โ€” its tight grain resists moisture penetration better than pine. Both perform well in bathrooms when sealed; MDF and veneered board are the ones that swell and delaminate with bathroom humidity.
Which wood is best for a bathroom shelf โ€” oak or pine?
Oak is the better performer in humid conditions due to its denser, tighter grain. It's the right choice for wetter bathrooms and shower rooms. Pine works well in bathrooms when sealed and costs less โ€” it suits a more rustic aesthetic and is a good choice for cloakrooms and drier bathroom environments.
How are the floating bathroom shelves fixed to the wall?
Using a concealed steel bracket system installed into the wall. The shelf slides onto the brackets and sits flush โ€” no visible fixings once installed. Fixings for solid masonry walls are included. If you're fixing into timber studs or plasterboard, get in touch before ordering.
Can I get a custom size?
Yes. All our bathroom shelves are made to order and bespoke dimensions are available. If standard sizes don't fit your alcove, above-toilet recess or specific wall, get in touch with your measurements before ordering.
How long does delivery take?
All bathroom shelves are made to order with a 3โ€“5 day lead time. Free UK delivery on all orders over ยฃ200,
